Basketball star LeBron James has apologised after sharing a lyric about “Jewish money” on his social media.

The Los Angeles Lakers star says he thought the lyric was a “compliment” and offers “apologies, for sure.”

The lyric comes from the song “ASMR” by rapper 21 Savage.

It says: “We been getting that Jewish money, everything is Kosher.”

James posted it over the weekend on his Instagram account, which has nearly 46 million followers.

James apologised on sports TV channel ESPN, saying: “Apologies, for sure, if I offended anyone.

“That’s not why I chose to share that lyric. I always [post lyrics]. That’s what I do. I ride in my car, I listen to great music, and that was the byproduct of it.

“So I actually thought it was a compliment, and obviously it wasn’t through the lens of a lot of people.”

US journalist Darren Rovell was one of those who criticised the post, saying it was “offensive”.

After James’ apology, Mr Rovell praised the star, saying: “One of the reasons he’s the off-the-court star he is is because he has an impressive emotional intelligence who, considering his time in social media age, has made so few mistakes.”
