Bird Box on Netflix: THAT shock death was very different in the book – here's how

In the Netflix horror, Sarah Paulson’s character is one of the first fatalities. When a mysterious presence begins affecting the Earth, it somehow drives anyone who looks at it to kill themselves. Paulson’s character Jessica is a devastating early victim: she first flips her car over, then throws herself in front of a truck.

But in the book on which the movie is based, she actually survives a little longer.

Called Shannon rather than Jessica, she spends months with Malorie as they try to wait out the horrifying events happening outside.

But she then meets a scary demise when she sees the beastly entity and kills herself in the bathroom – driving Malorie to leave.

Sandra Bullock, who plays Malorie in the film, recently spoke out about how an A-list star like Sarah Paulson helped to make the death even more horrifying on screen.

“Susanne [Bier, director] and I came up with Sarah’s name at the same time, literally on the same call,” she told HeyUGuys.

“We needed somebody who, if you only had her for a few minutes and she was gone, she would leave a massive vacancy. And Paulson is someone who can leave that vacancy.

“Since we are that close and we have that fun, there was an instant history that I think you could feel.

“So as sisters you have to feel that the two people knew eachother.

“[Paulson] had a lot of things she had to accomplish in her short time on screen, and she does it effortlessly.”

Bird Box has become a viral phenomenon for Netflix since its release, despite unspectacular reviews.

Alongside Bullock and Paulson, stars include Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar and Tom Hollander.
