Plenty of people find the art world scary enough as it is. Do they really pay all that money for that? While most of us scratch our heads, the artist and dealers and make a killing. Except, this time it is the art that is spilling the blood, in ever more gruesome ways. Netflix is still terrifying audiences worldwide with Bird Box, where everyone soon figures out that looking leads to death. The latest movie spins that idea on its head, as the victims willingly gaze in adoration at the very thing that will kill them. Or will it?

Velvet Buzzsaw reunites Gyllenhaal with his Nightcrawler costar Rene Russo and her husband, director Dan Gilroy.

They are joined by Toni Collette who horrified audiences last year in Hereditary and has known a thing or two about scares ever since The Sixth Sense.

Gyllenhaal plays Los Angeles art critic Morf Vanderwalt, whose gilded and self-satisfied world is brought crashing down with the discovery of mysterious new paintings by a dead artist.

As the art world goes crazy for the disturbing new works, strange and increasingly deadly things start to happen.

Monsters appear to watch from within the paintings and reach out their claws to wound and kill those who get too close.

Blood pools on a gallery floor and the terrified Vanderwalk screams: “Something truly god damn strange is going on.

What is going on? Is any of it real?

Gilroy told Vanity Fair: “The idea that artists invest their souls in their work and it’s more than a commodity — that has always interested me. I suddenly saw a way of incorporating it all, to explore how, when art and commerce are dangerously out of balance, bad things can happen.”

Bird Cage kept its cast blindfolded for much of the movie, desperately trying not to look. Velvet Buzzsaw also plays with the idea that looking can prove fatal, but also seems to carry a judgement that the state of the modern art scene has actually brought death to creativity and art itself.

Gilroy added: “Contemporary art really began as a movement to provoke and challenge,” Gilroy told Vanity Fair. “And it now has been completely co-opted by big money and business.”

VELVET BUZZSAW IS OUT ON NEXTFLIX ON FEBRUARY 1
