Disney lost over $130 million on monumental box office bomb
Multimillion-dollar Hollywood blockbusters are always going to be a financial risk for studios.
Sometimes it massively pays off with Top Gun: Maverick making almost $1.5 billion on a budget of just $177 million, or Joker crossing $1 billion on no more than $70 million.
However, other movies turn out to be huge box office bombs and the latest to join their ranks is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Harrison Ford’s fifth and final outing as the archaeologist adventurer hit cinemas last summer.
And now new financial statements released this past week reveal that Disney spent $134.2 million more making the movie than was received back in ticket sales.
Indiana Jones 5 cost a whopping $387.2 million but took only $384 million at the box office.
Studios generally receive half of the cinema takings, so Disney made around $192 million on Dial of Destiny.
Of course, the $134.2 million loss calculated by Forbes isn’t quite the end of the story as it doesn’t account for marketing costs adding to the box office bomb, and also revenue made from merchandise and sales of the movie on DVD and Blu-ray.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is streaming now on Disney+.
