Another major act has cancelled a UK show at the last minute.

Green Day were due to perform tonight at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow but the promoters have pulled the show just 30 minutes before the gates were due to open and excited fans were already gathering to see their heroes.

Extreme weather and heavy rain are cited as the reason why the concert cannot go ahead.

Glasgow City council, however, told the BBC that it had not been involved in the decision to cancel the show and social media has erupted at the revelation that up to 200 staff who turned up to work the event will not be paid.

Green Day posted a message on their website which said the stage was deemed: “unsafe for the fans and everyone involved”.

The band apologised to fans and said: “We are very distraught about this as we are in Glasgow now and were very much looking forward to this show as one the highlights of our tour.

“We have been playing in extreme weather conditions throughout this European tour, and the last thing we want to do is see a show cancelled.

“We love our Scottish fans and we don’t care if it’s raining… sideways, although the safety of our fans and our crew is always our top priority.”

Many fans were already at the park waiting to enter when the news spread.

Similar to recent events in London when Adele cancelled her final two shows at Wembley, fans were not just disappointed about missing their idols, they were angry about money wasted on travel and accomodation.

Fans will be refunded their ticket but cannot claim back the travel fares or hotel bookings.

Staff expecting to work at the event, meanwhile, were on a zero-hour contracts and have been left with nothing.

One staff member, Dr Jennifer Jones tweeted her anger and frustration.

In a series of posts she catalogued the events. She said: “Sitting waiting to find out when we are starting but word on the street it’s cancelled.

“They’ve cancelled the gig. Nobody has told the staff so we are standing in the park waiting to be told to leave.

“200 people waiting to get a 12 hours shift, not even been told what the plan is – some people planned lifts for midnight.”
