More Weinstein cases go before prosecutor
Prosecutors in Los Angeles have confirmed they are reviewing three more cases involving allegations against the disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
The district attorney for Los Angeles County says it has received the cases from the city’s police department in recent days.
Last month police in Beverly Hills passed the results of their investigations into two cases involving allegations against Weinstein to the same prosecutor.
It is for the district attorney to decide whether any criminal charges should be filed.
Police in London and New York have also been investigating numerous allegations of sexual offences against Weinstein, some dating back decades.
One of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, Weinstein’s career has unravelled spectacularly following an investigation by the New York Times last year.
Dozens of women, among them A-list Hollywood stars, have come forward to detail allegations of sexual harassment, unwanted advances and assault by the producer.
Weinstein was fired by the company he founded and ostracised by the industry that once embraced him as Hollywood faced a reckoning over revelations of its “casting couch” culture.
The scandal has brought down numerous big names in the movie and television industry and exposed what had long been considered its secret shame.
It has prompted campaigns such as #MeToo and Time’s Up to encourage victims to speak out and for society to confront harassment and inequality in the workplace.
The issue has continued to dominate the conversation during awards season in Hollywood.
Weinstein has not been charged with any crimes. He has apologised for his treatment of women but has denied allegations of non-consensual sex.
The cases in California are being reviewed by a task force established by LA’s district attorney Jackie Lacey specifically to deal with the Hollywood scandal. The office has not confirmed which investigations are being reviewed or when any decision might be made.
Assistant Chief Greg Risling told Sky News: “Three cases have been presented to our office by the Los Angeles Police Department regarding Mr Weinstein and are under review.”
