How much did Melania Trump’s engagement ring cost? Confusion over how much Donald paid

Melania Trump’s engagement ring was given to her by the 71-year-old billionaire when he asked the 47-year-old to marry him in April 2004.

Donald Trump proposed at the Costume Institute Gala in New York with an enormous diamond ring.

The piece was reported to have cost a whopping £1,085,895 ($1.5m) at the time.

Trump claimed to have bought the diamond from Graff for half price, stating: “Only a fool would say, ‘No thank you, I want to pay a million dollars more for a diamond.”

The diamond is said to be a D-flawless diamond, which are rare and certified under microscopic conditions to have no flaws.

However, there now appears to be some confusion about how much Trump paid for the ring.

The chairman of Graff, Laurence Graff, has said Donald was given “no favours”.

If Trump’s claims were true, this would value the rock at $3m, or £2.3m.

Meghan Markle’s engagement ring is said to be worth a rather large sum – but not as much as Melania’s. 

Grant Mobley, a gemologist and Director at Pluczenik, one of the world’s leading diamantaires estimated the ring would be worth around £122,500.

Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is now valued at over £300,000. 

The average cost of an engagement ring from a specialist jeweller is £3,000. 

While Melania’s ring costs a huge sum, it is not  among the most expensive engagement rings ever given. 

Kim Kardashian and Mariah Carey share that honour, as they were both given $10m rings.
