The film features the Abbott family — husband Lee, wife Evelyn, congenitally deaf daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau — who silently scavenge for supplies in the deserted town.

Deaf girl Regan Abbott is played by Millicent Simmonds – a deaf American actress who also starred in the drama film Wonderstruck.

For Wonderstruck, she was nominated for several awards for best youth performance.

Millicent was born in Utah in 2003, and is the middle child of four, with two older siblings and two younger.

At twelve months old, she lost her hearing due to a medication overdose so her mother learned American Sign Language and taught the family so they could communicate with her.

When she was three years old, she started attending the Jean Massieu School of the Deaf, where she joined a drama club, and later joined Mueller Park Junior High School in the fall of 2015.

Millicent competed with some 250 others for the role of Rose in Wonderstruck, and moved to New York City with her mum and younger siblings when she won the role to begin filming.

When Wonderstruck premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, the Associated Press’s Jake Coyle said Simmonds’s screen debut was “hailed as a breakthrough”.

And this year, she starred in the well-received horror film A Quiet Place as the deaf daughter of a hearing couple, played by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.

A Quiet Place is set in 2020, when humans are being picked off by scary creatures with incredible hearing, who hunt their prey based on sounds alone.

This means that the central family – led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt – have to go about their day-to-day lives in complete silence, or risk being killed.

A Quiet Place has had impeccable reviews from critics and has been dubbed the best horror of the year so far. A sequel is now thought to be in the works.
