Avengers Infinity War box office: Marvel epic set to cross $1 billion in RECORD timing

The superhero crossover may just be the cinematic event of the decade.

Not only is it the third film in a trilogy, but the accumulation of the last 18 MCU movies.

The hype is real with Avengers Infinity War, as the Marvel epic smashed Star Wars The Force Awakens’ biggest opening record last weekend.

Star Wars made $248 million in its US domestic opening three years ago, but Infinity War has managed to rake in $257 million.

Not only that, but on a worldwide scale Infinity War topped Fast and Furious 8’s $541 million with an impressive $640 million – and it’s not even opened in China yet.

Having only opened last weekend, Avengers has so far made over $905 million and is now set to cross $1 billion today.

Of course that was always to be expected, but this will be in record time, being achieved in just 12 days – again beating Star Wars’ previous record.

Meanwhile on Thursday it passed the entire runs of massive superhero movies like Spider-Man 3 ($890 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873 million).

Infinity War is set for another weekend at the top of the box office, but it remains to be seen if it will top Star Wars’ other record as the biggest second weekend ever at over $149 million.

Having beaten Star Wars’ opening record, the Marvel epic has a good chance at challenging The Force Awakens’ hold as third highest-grossing movie ever at $2 billion.

And perhaps even James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar, which hold the top two positions, with the latter sitting unbeaten at $2.7 billion.

Amusingly Cameron has recently slammed “hypergonadal” Avengers movies, as he gears up to release his four Avatar sequels.

Nevertheless, with such a huge box office opening, Avengers Infinity War has a good chance of challenging these films’ positions on the leader board.
