Between its legendary nightlife and bustling resort scene, nature may not necessarily be the first thing that springs to mind in association with Cancun.

A visit to Xcaret however, reveals a different side of the popular Mexican destination, one that’s slightly unexpected.

At the privately owned theme park, resort and self-described ecotourism development, visitors will find everything from a Butterfly Pavilion to a Coral Reef Aquarium. There’s also jungle trails and underground rivers, and those are just a few examples of the way nature is showcased.

Known as the best eco-archaeological park in Cancun and Riviera Maya, Xcaret was created to be a natural sanctuary where the history of Mexico combines with the traditions and splendor of the Mayan culture. The result is a unique experience featuring entertainment, food and a long list of activities for nature lovers.

Butterfly Pavilion

Amid the waterfalls, streams and vegetation of Xcaret’s Butterfly Pavilion, there are numerous varieties of butterflies. The pavilion is even home to some species that have been in existence since pre-Hispanic times. At 3,500 square meets and 15 meters high, it is one of the largest butterfly pavilions in the world.

Natural Museum of Orchids and Bromeliads

Yet another unique experience for nature lovers, Xcaret’s greenhouse of orchids is a mosaic of colors, textures and scents. The facility breeds various species of orchids, some of which are endangered. There’s currently 25 hybrid plants and 89 of the 105 species of orchids from the Mayan region on display.

Tropical Jungle Trail

Looking for a peaceful place to escape and be amongst nature? Look no further than the Tropical Jungle Trail, which was created to be an ideal place to take refuge amid the diversity of trees and plants that are native to the Yucatan. The trail provides an educational ecological tour that showcases the nature of the Riviera Maya through informative panels. Xcaret protects more than 70,000 plants.

Paradise River

Don’t miss enjoying one of the underground rivers at Xcaret. If you don’t want to get wet, you can explore the river and its scenery from the comfort of a raft, passing through the canals, which are surrounded by jungle. Along the way you may also see blue crabs, iguanas, peccaries and more.

Underground Rivers

Part of the natural network of channels that circulate under the Yucatan Peninsula, the underground rivers at Xcaret are another memorable experience. Explore the Blue River, Maya River or Manatee River, the three rivers of Xcaret that flow to the ocean, and mangroves inhabited by pink flamingos. It’s a natural treasure that can be enjoyed by all ages.
