Bohemian Rhapsody movie cast: Who plays Freddie Mercury? Meet Rami Malek

Telling the story of Queen’s rise to rock superstardom, the movie includes the band’s stint at Live Aid in 1985, and the teaser trailer includes plenty of music.

So who is playing the man at the centre of it all; Freddie Mercury?

Step forward Rami Malek, a 37-year-old award-winning American actor.

Malek is best known for his work on Mr Robot, for which he won a Critics’ Choice Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.

He also been nominated by the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Gild and the TCA Awards for his work on the popular show.

His first film role was in 2006’s Night At The Museum, in which he played Pharaoh Ahkmenrah – a part he reprised in 2009’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and 2014’s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

He has also starred as Benjamin in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 in 2012, and alongside Rihanna in Battleship that same year.

On TV, he was in an episode of Gilmore Girls in 2004, and has also been in Medium, 24, The Pacific and BoJack Horseman.

In Bohemian Rhapsody, he is joined by Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Gwilym Lee as Brian May and Joseph Mazzello as John Deacon.

May and Taylor have had involvement, with May writing on Instagram in January that he was on the set.

“Today, under the auspices of our new supreme pilot, Dexter Fletcher, I got my own directorial chair!” he said.

“I was very touched. So! My first day on the set of Bohemian Rhapsody the Movie for more than 6 weeks, and the atmosphere is massively warm and joyful.

“The entire BR company has been through storms which would have sunk many a ship, but they’re all still on board, full of optimism – and with a team spirit stronger than ever.

“There’s such a great feeling of pride in this movie. I wish I could show you pictures! But for now it’s good to protect the surprises.”

The “storms” he referred to presumably involved the change of director, with Dexter Fletcher taking over from Bryan Singer.

He was allegedly fired for being absent from the production on multiple occasions, and for clashing with the cast and crew.

Bohemian Rhapsody is out on October 24 in the UK.
