WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.

Evans’ Steve Rogers – aka Captain America – was one of the few Marvel favourites who survived Thanos’s Snap at the end of Infinity War – alongside the likes of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, among others.

But the star has been very vocal previously about his contract with the studio coming to an end; indicating on more than one occasion that his time playing Steve is coming to an end.

Other times, however, he has hinted that he could be tempted back to play the role again.

Now, he’s spoken fairly definitively about the upcoming reshoots for next year’s as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 being his last time putting on the suit.

So does this mean he will be killed off in the next film? It’s certainly a big possibility.

According to USA Today, he said: “[Leaving Marvel] is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve done.

“It’s all those feelings of graduating high school or college or just the passage of time. (Like) when you leave an apartment that you’ve lived in for a long time.”

Looking ahead to his final day on set, he added: “It’s going to be really, really, really hard to know it’s the last time you’re putting the suit on.”

Downey Jr was a little more coy, saying: “If Iron Man’s gonna hang up his jersey or whatever comes down from on high, I feel like everything is being left in very capable hands.”

Before Infinity War’s sequel is out next May, we still have Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain America to look forward to.

The latter movie was alluded to in the end-credits sequence for Infinity War, which saw Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) appearing to make contact with Carol Danvers – played by Brie Larson.

Characters thought to be making comebacks in Avengers 4 are Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, though neither are confirmed.

Avengers: Infinity War is out now.
