Kilauea has been intensifying this week and this morning around 5am local time an ash cloud was rocketed about 30,000ft into the sky, according to Press Association.

A reporter warned of a massive explosion just hours before a plume of ash was fired into the air.

Reporter Miguel Almaguer, was delivering an evening segment on the volcano when lava erupted behind him.

He said: “While many are waiting for Kilauea’s crater to blow, this is the reality so many face in residential areas.

“These geysers of lava have been exploding for two weeks straight.

“Every morning and every night here they feel the earth shake. Many homes are closer than this.”

In the Hawaii volcano video by NBC, the explosion of lava can be seen firing in the background as the journalist delivered his report on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday morning the Hawaii volcano Kilauea sent a massive plume of ash into the skyline.

The United States Geographical Survey said there is an order for residents to take shelter in place.

Hawaii Volcano Observatory officials confirmed that there was an explosive eruption at around 4:15 a.m. this morning, but they still have yet to assess whether it was a steam-driven explosion that had been previously predicted by geologists.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said: “This is a Civil Defense Message for May 17 at 5am.

“Hawaii Volcano Observatory reports that an Explosive Eruption at Kilauea’s summit has occurred.

“The resulting ash plume will cover the surrounding area. The wind will carry the plume towards the south-east.

“You should shelter in place if you are in the path of the ash plume. Driving conditions may be dangerous so if you are driving, pull off the road and wait until visibility improves.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the floor of the Kilauea caldera has dropped about three feet, prompting a warning that a major eruption could be imminent.

The strongest quake to hit the area was 4.4 in magnitude, registering as one of the strongest in the area.

More than 10,000 residents have so far been displaced, but today’s eruption could force many more Hawaiian’s to the southeast of Kilauea to evacuate.

More than 30 homes have been destroyed by the lava with hundreds more homes and buildings damaged.
