Pfeiffer will play Janet Van Dyne in the Marvel sequel, and features in a cluster of new character-specific posters.

The triple Oscar-nominated actress is a huge coup for the studio, with Ant-Man and the Wasp expected to be a big box office hit this summer – the first MCU caper since Avengers: Infinity War.

Laurence Fishburne, Michael Douglas, Hannah John-Kamen, and top-billed stars Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd also feature in their own posters, released late yesterday.

The official synopsis reads: “From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant Man and the Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink.

“In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father.

“As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr Hank Pym with an urgent new mission.

“Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.”

Marvel chief Kevin Feige recently spoke very highly of Pfeiffer’s arrival.

“I don’t want to say too much, but I will say that’s she’s every bit as iconic and amazing in this part as you would imagine,” he told Vulture last year.

“People ask sometimes about movie stars and star power and who’s the most exciting person to be around, and the truth is that once you get to know them as people, they don’t feel like movie stars — everybody is just a super-impressive human.

“But in a room full of movie stars, Michelle Pfeiffer rises to the top.”

Rudd and Lilly were both absent from Avengers: Infinity War – so with this new movie set before it, it could explain why they were nowhere to be seen when Thanos tried to destroy half of humanity.

The other MCU movie due before next year’s Avengers 4 is Captain Marvel, which will introduce Brie Larson as Carol Danvers.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is out on August 3 in the UK.
