Avengers Infinity War: Did Loki have THIS shock plan all along? 'He knew Thanos the best'

WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.

The blockbuster movie saw the Tom Hiddleston-played character killed off in its opening moments.

Trying to face off with Thanos proved to be a very bad mistake, and he ultimately paid with his life.

But did he know exactly what he was doing the whole time?

That’s a new suggestion put forward by Reddit user tenaciousNIKA, who wrote: “Firstly, I want you all to remember that he at one point was a sort of honorary child of Thanos, Loki would know Thanos a lot better than most.

“He must know of his goal to wipe out half the universe since Loki tried to do so to Earth on his behalf.

“Secondly, I believe Loki deliberately saved Thor’s life. If I’m not mistaken Thanos was prepared to kill Thor in the opening sequence.

“Loki, knowing Thanos’ MO, tried to kill Thanos knowing he would retaliate and kill him, leaving Thor as the half of their two lives that survived.

“Loki knows Thor is the better fighter of the two and could defeat Thanos and with Stormbreaker he almost did which brings us to my third point.”

The theorist went on: “Did Loki order the creation of Stormbreaker? I can’t confirm this since [Eitri] didn’t really mention a timeline but it’s possible Loki as Odin commissioned the weapon, and it’s possible that’s what Loki meant when he said ‘the sun will shine on our people again’. However if this isn’t true that line could be referring to something else…

“I always found it odd how the movie opened with the attack on Thor’s ship already being over. Perhaps it’s because something important happened during the attack.

“The directors confirmed that half the ship including Valkyrie escaped the attack. Perhaps Loki orchestrated it while giving Valkyrie the mission of keeping the Asgardians safe and retrieving something or someone strong enough to contend with Thanos.

“Loki having knowledge of Thanos’ life’s mission for at least 6 years would give him time to come up with counter measures to such an event.

“And so Loki would be to credit for the survival of his people, so that the sun may shine on them again.”

Whilst it’s a theory that doesn’t involve Loki coming back, like so much other Loki-centric speculation has, it certainly adds an extra layer to what was only a very quick appearance in the movie.

It’s unknown now if Hiddleston will be back in Avengers 4, although it seems a very common assumption among fans that time travel will be used in some capacity.

Loki was initially meant to be killed off in Thor: The Dark World, but it tested badly with initial audiences.

Avengers: Infinity War is out now.
