Top Gun 2: Huge Val Kilmer news – Iceman star spotted back in the Danger Zone

It’s been two long years since the first reports surfaced of a Top Gun sequel, followed by 18 months of silence.

Clearly nobody was feeling the need for speed back then.

Except, that is, for Val Kilmer, who, in his own words, “jumped the Top Gun’ when he preemptively announced he was already back in talks to return to one of his most iconic roles.

He had to retract his statement and everything went quiet. Except for Kilmer, who couldn’t resist posting a few more social media heavy hints that he was very keen to get back on board.

Top Gun 2 Maverick officially started filming on May 31, but only Tom Cruise was confirmed to star.

Was he ignoring Kilmer’s hints? Had Iceman lost his cool?

Posting a pic of yourself last May in an Iceman t-shirt with the tagline, “Still got the moves!! Still got it!!” is hardly very subtle.

But, a year later, it finally seems to have paid off…

TheWrap is reporting that Kilmer has been spotted in San Diego, where the movie is being made.

The industry site said: “Val Kilmer will star opposite Tom Cruise in the Top Gun: Maverick, an individual with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.

“Kilmer will join Cruise in the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 action blockbuster, in which Cruise’s aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is now a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

“A rep for Paramount declined to comment on the casting of Kilmer, who has been spotted around the San Diego hotel the studio has been using since production began last week.”

With Kilmer back and reports Kenny Loggins is working on a new version of Danger Zone, it sounds like everything is falling into place.

Cruise said: “Stylistically it’s going to be same. Aviators are back. The need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one… but a progression for Maverick.”

FULL STORY IN THEWRAP

Top Gun 2: Maverick hits UK cinemas on July 12, 2019.
