The news of Murphy’s death was confirmed by his nephew Floyd Murphy Jr on Facebook.

The Blues Brothers guitarist died at his home in Miami, Florida on June 15.

Murphy was one of the original members of The Blues Brothers band, which he joined in 1978 when it was just a Saturday Night Live sketch.

But 1980 John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s musical comedy duo became a movie, one that would go on to become a cult classic and saw Murphy play himself.

The plot saw The Blues Brothers putting their band back together to save their old orphanage from closure.

Murphy starred opposite Aretha Franklin, who took the role of his sassy wife in the iconic Soul Food cafe scene.

But when Matt decides to go back on the road with The Blues Brothers once again she breaks into her song, Think, which can be watched in the clip above.

Then 18 years later in 1998, Murphy returned with the band for Blues Brothers 2000.

Once again he took part in a scene with Franklin, who was furious that he would go back on the road with Jake and Elwood (again) after he ended up in jail at the end of the last movie.

Especially as now Matt had a successful car dealership, why would he throw that away?

So naturally Franklin broke out into song once again with Respect, but of course that doesn’t stop Matt joining The Blues Brothers for one last joy ride.

Sadly Murphy isn’t the first of the original Blues Brothers band to have left us.

Belushi died two years after the original film was released at just 33 after a drug overdose.

Meanwhile trumpet player Alan Rubin, aka Mr Fabulous, died of lung cancer in 2011, followed by bassist Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn – who died in his sleep, in 2012.

Other cast members who’ve passed away include James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Henry Gibson, Kathleen Freeman, Jeff Morris and Charles Napier.
