The Star Wars franchise is well-known for audience-pleasing stunt cameos whch add an unexpected punch.

Rogue One had the ‘daddy’ of all cameos when Darth Vader hit the screen and Solo: A Star Wars Story added another Sith with Darth Maul’s eleventh hour entry.

Star Wars 9 is in even more need of a familiar face or two now that the final trilogy has lost Han Solo, Leia and Luke.

A new report has raised hopes that one of the most beloved and iconic characters will be making a major comeback.

With characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt all expected to be part of the Anthology spin-off movies, there aren’t many others for Disney to choose from – not to mention that all three are long dead.

Although this isn’t expected to stop Luke returning as some kind of Force ghost.

However it looks like the void left by Han’s passing may be filled by his fellow rogue, last seen in the current Solo movie.

Star Was news site Fantha Tracks said: “Billy Dee Williams is back for Episode IX as Lando Calrissian.

“We were asked by our original source to verify this with another independent source before we ran with it. We did that, confirming that this is indeed correct (and before anyone asks, we’re not going to name our sources because that’s not how this works).

“Filming on Episode IX starts next month, so expect to see official confirmation of this exciting casting very soon.”

Lando was last seen in The Last Jedi, finally choosing a side and helping the rebels defeat the Empire.

Billy Dee Williams himself is 81 now, six years older than Harrison Ford. Can he really be tempted back on to the screen one last time?

Fans who are still smarting from a perceived betrayal of the original Star Wars legacy may be very pleased to see him…
