Star Wars Solo FLOP kills off Obi-Wan AND Boba Fett plans? 'No more Anthology movies'

Solo A Star Wars Story is set to be the first flop in the franchise’s hstory. Not only that, it is likley to flop on a previously unimaginable scale.

After three weeks on worldwide release, it has limped to $342million at the global box office with a major Star Wars fan boycott campaign taking some of the credit for its failure.

Considering it is also reported to be the most expensive Star Wars film ever made, industry estimates suggest that it would need to take $500million just to break even.

Now a major US site is reporting that Disney and Lucasfilm has put all future Anthology movie plans “on hold.”

This would include the highly anticipated Ewan McGregor return as Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, which had been reported to be in pre-production.

US film site Collider said: “Sources with knowledge of the situation tell Collider that Lucasfilm has decided to put plans for more A Star Wars Story spinoff movies on hold, instead opting to focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film.

“Sources tell us that the previously rumored Obi-Wan movie was in active development, but those who were working on the film are no longer involved.”

“It was recently reported that Logan filmmaker James Mangold was in early talks to write and direct the Boba Fett film, but that was before Solo’s release.”

What went wrong?

The well-publicised firing of original Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller meant extensive and hugely expensive reshoots took place. The film’s May release was always regarded as a little risky just five months after The Last Jedi, with every Star Wars film previously occupying the prestigious Christmas ‘event movie’ slot – and there was much talk of why it was necessary to tamper with a beloved character who was already so well-established.

The greatest shock, though, was a public boycott campaign by diehard Star Wars fans furious about The Last Jedi.

Whatever their grievances with Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy’s decisions over Episode 8 and the future of the franchise, it is unlikley fans were aiming to also derail the hugely anticpated Obi-Wan project.

To rub salt in the wound, Disney are now said to concentrating instead on the planned spin-off trilogy from Rian Johnson which will follow Episode 9.

It seems that there is planty more trouble ahead in a galaxy far, far away.
