Top Gun 2 Maverick: Tom Cruise speaks out over Val Kilmer health fears
Back in 2016 Michael Douglas told the press that Kilmer was “dealing with” throat cancer.
The actor’s weight loss and voice issues have contributed to the concerns, although Kilmer himself initially dismissed the commens by his “misinformed” fellow star.
Last year Kilmer appeared to finally confirm the reports in a Reddit open fan interview when he revealed he had “a healing of cancer… Because I don’t sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather.”
Now the star is back as Iceman in the Top Gun sequel, speculation continues about his health.
The star is a Christian Scientist and while they do not prohibit medical treatment, they believe that diseases can be more effectively healed with prayer alone.
Kilmer had prematurely annnounced his involvement with the long-awaited project over a year before it was officially announced. He also posted a series of social media messages and images announcing he was eager to return to the iconic role. His weight loss was evident in the pictures.
During a new interview for the latest Mission Impossible blockbuster, Cruise was asked how Kilmer was doing.
Cruise reassured fans and said: “He’s doing really well.”
He also explained what it was like being reunited so many years after the 1986 original, telling EXTRA: “He’s doing really well.”
The daredevil star also has his own share of physical problems to deal with, after numerous high-profile injuries. He revealed just how bad that on-set bone break had been while filming in London, when he slammed into a concrete wall while jumping between two buildings.
Cruise said: “Listen, I’ve broken a few bones in my time and it was just another broken bone. It was unpleasant. Definitely unpleasant… I knew instantly when it happened… I was like, ‘Dammit, I broke it.’
“They were concerned if I’d be able to run again. I was like, ‘No, I’m gonna be running again.’ They said maybe in six months. And I had to be running in the next couple of weeks.”
Mission Impossible: Fallout is out on July 25
Top Gun 2: Maverick hits UK cinemas on July 12, 2019.
