The Joaquin Phoenix helmed Joker movie had been given the working title Romeo.

Now the actual title for the project has been revealed and it is far less imaginative than the Shakespearian inspired production title.

What is the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie title?

The movie is simply called Joker.

While fans may be slightly disappointed, writers would be hard-pressed to find another title for a movie all about how the Joker became the Joker.

Joker is being directed by serious crime auteur Martin Scorcese, promising DC Comics fans a much darker adaptation of their favourite painted-faced villain.

Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Joker in Suicide Squad was met with a lack of enthusiasm, but Joaquin Phoenix may be just the man to pull the Joker out of his slump.

Fans of the Jared Leto iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime shouldn’t fret, another standalone Joker movie starring Leto is also in the works.

The Phoenix Joker is not part of the DC universe but instead a larger and separate Warner Bros franchise focussing on the smaller budget and darker adaptations of comic book characters.

The timing seems perfect for a dark crime thriller, and anticipation is definitely mounting.

Speaking to Collider about taking on the role of Joker, Phoenix said he had been looking forward to a film like this for years.

“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’

“[When] I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character.’ I felt like you could get something on screen,” Phoenix said.

He also discussed the tone and uniqueness of his take on the Joker for this solo movie.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … It feels unique, and I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting,” he said.

The Joker movie is said to be “an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”
