Mamma Mia 2 location: Where is Mamma Mia 2 filmed?
Mamma Mia is back in cinemas with all the Abba tunes you didn’t know you knew the words to and some you don’t know the words to at all.
The sequel to the 2008 original starts ten years after the events of the first movie, with Sophie heading to the island of Kalokairi where her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) set up a hotel.
The second Mamma Mia follows Donna’s life in a series of flashbacks, which feature Donna’s travels from Paris to Greece.
Where is Mamma Mia 2 filmed?
Despite taking place on the same Greek island as the first movie, Mamma Mia 2 was actually filmed in Croatia.
The island of Vis in Croatia served as a stand-in for Kalokairi, with other scenes shot on mainland Croatia.
Vis features white sands beaches with turquoise waters and lush greenery, making it an apt replacement for the Greek island.
The first Mamma Mia movie was filmed on an actual Greek island – the small island of Skopelos.
Filming also took place at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England for the scenes which featured Cher.
The Observer’s Mark Kermode gave the movie five stars, writing: “This slick sequel delivers sharp one-liners, joyously contrived plot twists and an emotional punch that left our critic reeling.”
Plenty of the cast returned to Kalokairi aka Vis, including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Dominic Cooper.
Mamma Mia’s three potential fathers Pierce Brosnan (Sam), Colin Firth (Harry) and Stellan Skarsgård (Bill) also reprised their roles.
The flashback scenes see Young Donna portrayed by Lily James (War & Peace) as Young Donna in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
For the swap in location, Mamma Mia 2 received plenty of praise from critics.
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) is returning to her role as Tanya Chesham-Leigh, one of Donna’s friends and former bandmates with her young-self played by Jessica Keenan Wynn.
Dame Julie Walters picks up her role once again as Rosie Mulligan with her young counterpart played by Alexa Davies.
All the ‘fathers’ also have counterparts, starring Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Young Sam, Hugh Skinner as Young Harry and Josh Dylan as Young Bill.
Mamma Mia 2 is in cinemas now.
