Mission Impossible Fallout deleted scene shock: Why helicopter crunch from trailer was CUT
The trailer for the action-packed blockbuster ends with a shot of Ethan (Tom Cruise) in a helicopter, hurtling towards an oncoming truck – seemingly with no room to escape a collision.
However that scene is not in the finished cut of the film – which director Christopher McQuarrie has explained was simply down to the sheer volume of action set-pieces elsewhere in the movie.
“We put together this big, giant film and we were testing the movie, we tested it four times before we finally finished it, and there was just so much action in the movie,” he told Digital Spy.
“We had to choose what was going to stay and what will go.”
But will people be able to see the deleted footage as a special feature on a DVD release? The signs are good.
“I didn’t do an extended cut. The movie you see is the director’s cut, I really believe that whatever you see in theatres is what the process delivered,” McQuarrie explained.
“But there were some moments that we worked so hard on and they were so beautiful, we put together a little gift basket for people on the DVD.”
Mission: Impossible – Fallout has received exceptional support from critics, and currently has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The critical consensus reads: “Fast, sleek, and fun, Mission: Impossible – Fallout lives up to the ‘impossible’ part of its name by setting yet another high mark for insane set pieces in a franchise full of them.”
McQuarrie had previously confirmed that the new film features the most ambitious stunts Tom Cruise has ever attempted.
In fact, during production of this film, he even sustained an injury that caused production to be temporarily halted.
“Without question the biggest and most difficult stunts that he’s ever done,” he told Collider.
“Some of the most challenging stunts he’s ever done. But, also, a much deeper story. A much more emotional story.”
Mission: Impossible – Fallout is out now.
