Star Wars 9: Will Rey and Kylo Ren create the chance for MORE Star Wars sequels?

Star Wars is rife with speculations and theories, with an entire extended universe of canon and non-canon materials to choose from.

Fans have responded to the backlash against Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi by coming up with plenty of ways his work can be undone – from Rey’s lineage to Luke’s death.

Does a new fan theory prove Rey and Kylo Ren will create the chance for more Star Wars sequels?

One Reddit user thinks so.

The fan theories subforum on Reddit is a hotbed of meditations and musings.

Most recently, one user wrote they think Rey and Kylo Ren (formerly known as Ben Solo) will together create balance in the force.

They will do this by fusing their souls to create a new force tree.

Where does their theory find its basis? In the source material, of course.

Instead of debunking The Last Jedi as non-canon, this Reddit user addresses key points in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi as proof their theory is plausible.

They wrote: “Rey begins on a desert planet, devoid of trees and plant life.

“If Rey ends her journey by transforming herself into a tree, this creates a thematic balance in her character arc.”

Further, Kylo Ren solidified his darkness by killing his father, Han Solo, while on the Starkiller base

The Reddit user described Starkiller – a giant machine – as being the “thematic opposite of a forest.”

They also point out a key moment between Rey and Kylo ren took place in a forest: Rey’s abduction on Takodana.

During The Last Jedi, Rey reveals she has seen the island Ach-to and the Force tree in her dreams.

This connection to the Force tree could be read as a sort of premonition, in addition to the force connection.

After the ancient Force tree is destroyed, Ben and Rey’s tree could take the place of this tree.

The Reddit user writes: “[T]hematic balance is achieved; the thematic statement being something along the lines of letting go of the past, creating something new in its place that combines the best pieces of both.

“Rey and Ben’s fusion would represent Old (Ben) and New (Rey) / Dark (Ben) and Light (Rey) / Chaos (Ben) and Order (Rey) coming together to forge a new path of balance.”

A new Force tree would open up a wide world of Star Wars movies in future, and given Rian Johnson has been given an entire new trilogy to play with it seems likely this theory could hold some water.

Fans will have to wait until Star Wars Episode IX to find out.
