How do you solve a problem like the Mad Titan?

Thanos was virtually invincible in Infinity War and has just ended half of all life acrss the universe. Surely it will need someone unbelievably poweful like Captain Marvel to bring him down?

Except Marvel likes to do the unexpected and always tries to layer in emotional and philosophical dimesions.

The new directors’ and writers’ commentaries for the Infinity War home entertainment packages are bursting with tantalising revelations, not least the fact that Thanos and the Infinity Stones were badly damaged by Thor’s attack and the actual draining use of the Infinity Gauntlet.They also reveal which hero’s story has been wrapped up with Thanos since the very beginning.

Tony and Thanos are the two sides to this epic story.

Director Joe Russo said: “(There is an) interesting parallel between Thanos and Tony. They’re both aware of something from an early point and constantly having to deal with being smarter. Thanos is a futurist as much as Tony Stark.”

Co-writer Christopher Markus spelled out Tony’s central importance even more clearly.

Markus added: “He (Thanos) is aware of Stark from the original Battle of New York as the person who undid the plan. It’s interesting because, as Thanos moves forward from this moment, once he disposes of his armour, he almost becomes a holy warrior where he doesn’t spend a lot of his energy intentionally trying to murder people unless they are, in some way, a threat to his agenda.

“Almost no one ends up being a threat to the agenda except for Tony, who I think he feels has a sort of existential connection to Thanos.”

Tony is the threat, and this adds even more significance to Doctor Strange’s determination to save his lfe at any cost.

Strange hands over the Time Stone to save Tony because he has seen a future path where Tony is the key to defeating Thanos.

Of course, nothing will be easy or without cost.

Robert Downey Jr is likely to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers 4 leading fans to speculate Tony will pay the ultimate price. 

He is already on borrowed time after Thanos inflicted terrible injuries on him.

If Thanos and Tony are both so intertwined, will they BOTH leave the story together?
