Mamma Mia 2: Will there be a THIRD movie? Amanda Seyfried admits ‘I don’t f-ing think so’
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again has dominated the UK box office for three consecutive weekends, despite competition from Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Box office data also shows it is doing considerably better at this stage in its run than the 2008 original was, and the soundtrack is on course for a third week at number one on the album chart.
So could bosses be tempted to recreate the magic a third time – despite appearing to round off Donna’s story very definitively in the sequel?
Amanda Seyfried, who has played Sophie in both films, doesn’t sound keen.
“I feel there is enough ABBA music for sure but I’m gonna say the same thing I said 10 years ago: I don’t f-ing think so,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
“It seems like it would be ridiculous. But now anything can happen!”
She added: “The only thing is I would be worried the studio would only make it to make money and, with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, I know that’s not the case.”
That said, the star seemed a little more positive about the prospect when probed by Radio Times.
“Oh yeah! Beyond yes,” she beamed when asked if she’d be up for reprising her role once again.
Seyfried, along with Lily James in the flashback timeline, does most of the dramatic heavy-lifting in Mamma Mia 2, and was recently heavily praised by Donna star Meryl Streep.
“I think Amanda brings something to this particular incarnation of Mamma Mia that’s very special,” she said.
“She’s the heartbeat of the film. Her emotion carries the whole story forward and she really moved me. I think she’s magic.
“Plus, she’s got a cracking voice and she gets to use it more in this one.”
James – who plays the younger Donna – also came in for high praise from the legendary Streep.
“I had no idea Lily James had the singing chops,” she said.
“Some people sing from the bottom of their feet, right up. She shakes the rafters, she’s amazing.
“Lily has a great energy. And her spirit is what young Donna was.”
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out now.
