Ant-Man and the Wasp: Why didn't Ant-Man sequel feature flashback from THIS Marvel hero?
Ant-Man and the Wasp was full of revelations, from misunderstood fates to new foes and allegiances, including the history of the Marvel character Goliath.
Laurence Fishburne‘s super-powered character first appeared in the trailer, striking up some good old-fashioned banter with Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd).
But fans are wondering why Ant-Man sequel didn’t feature flashback from Goliath himself?
WARNING: Spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp ahead.
Despite the fact that Ant-Man and the Wasp teased the hero’s backstory, fans now know why he was never actually revealed.
Bill Foster (aka Goliath), is a biochemist and former partner of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).
During the trailer, Foster and Lang start “comparing sizes” as Evangeline Lily’s Wasp/Hope van Dyne pithily categorises it.
Foster says there was a time he once reached 21-feet in height.
Fans were rightly wondering why, if they went through all the trouble to drop this tidbit of information, did director Peyton Reed choose not to include an actual flashback of this moment?
Reed has finally revealed the answer.
During an interview with Empire, he said: “It felt, just narratively, it just was too much of a left turn.”
Foster wasn’t exactly Ant-Man and the Wasp’s villain, but he certainly was an antagonist.
In fact, Reed compared the rivalry between Foster and Pym to that of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Fishburne was the actor required to portray this character and go “toe-to-toe” with Michael Douglas.
Playing Bill Foster was an exciting step for Fishburne, according to an interview he gave to Yahoo in 2017.
Ant-Man and the Wasp had more complex villains, Foster included, allowing the movie to have a more grown-up feel from its predecessor.
But giving Foster a moment of triumph even in a flashback may have been too morally ambiguous for a Marvel film.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is in cinemas now.
