The legendary soul genius Aretha Franklin passed away on Thursday, August 16 at the age of 76.

Franklin will be remembered forever for her vocal prowess, her musical genius, and the barriers through which she smashed as a woman of colour.

From singing at the Obama inauguration to filling in for Pavarotti to perform Nessun Dorma, her talents ran the gamut.

Here’s one you may not remember: her show-stealing scene in The Blues Brothers.

Aretha Franklin appears in a diner scene which would have been otherwise unremarkable other than the fact the queen herself presided over it.

She performs her single Think, long touted as a feminist anthem, which was originally released in 1968.

For The Blues Brothers, Franklin did not shy away from its female-empowerment angle.

The diner scene saw Franklin’s character, Mrs Murphy, telling her husband he had to ‘think about the consequences’ of walking out on her and their business.

For the Blues Brothers, Franklin lip-synced, something the divine songstress wasn’t used to doing.

As a result, this scene required a plethora of takes and considerable editing.

Alongside Aretha are her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, singing back up.

The Blues Brothers saxophonist Lou Marini also performed in the scene, though some haphazard editing led to his head being out of shot for some of the diner scene.

Think marked Franklin’s seventh top 10 hit in the United States.

Franklin’s publicist today confirmed her passing at her Detroit home on Thursday.

The statement read: “Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute.”

Franklin’s family added: “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart.

“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”

“We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world.

“Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on.

“As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Musicians, fans, celebrities, and politicians alike have taken to social media to commemorate Franklin’s talent, her life, and her inimitable soul.
