Harry Potter theory ‘The Cursed Child play is written by Rita Skeeter in Wizarding World’

Just over two years ago Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, an official sequel to JK Rowling’s book series, debuted as a two-part stage play in the West End.

Simultaneously with the premiere the script was published, but some fans felt the story read like “horrible fan fiction”.

Now a popular new fan theory on Reddit claims The Cursed Child is actually just a play written by Rita Skeeter in the Wizarding World, which explains its “numerous inconsistencies” and problems.

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD AHEAD.

Reddit user captainedwinkrieger writes: “The Cursed Child contains numerous inconsistencies about many Harry Potter characters, including but not limited to the secret child of Voldemort, the suspicion that Scorpius is said secret child AND that Time Turners are a thing again.

“For the sake of argument, let’s just say that this is fiction within the Wizarding World, and it’s written by Rita Skeeter; the journalist who’s very existence thrives on getting things wrong about famous people.”

“1. It makes no sense for Scorpius to be the suspected son of Voldemort when he was born 8 years after Voldemort’s death.“2. Harry wouldn’t have nearly that much of a problem with Albus becoming friends with a Malfoy after he himself is on good terms with Malfoy.”

They continued: “3. Voldemort having a child goes completely against his character. He was the physical embodiment of the Slytherin ideal of self-preservation, and he wasn’t able to form anything resembling a relationship.

“Plus, he was more annoyed with Bellatrix’s advances than anything else. Not to mention that he was obsessed with his own immortality to a fault.

“4. The time-turners were probably more like a badly kept secret to anyone outside the Department of Mysteries, and the destruction of the Ministry’s entire stock probably didn’t reach the ears of the general populace. This is evidenced by Hagrid’s lack of knowledge about this event in Half Blood Prince.

“5. Cedric Diggory was a good person, and the insinuation that he was a bad loss away from willingly becoming a Death Eater is something you would expect from a tabloid journalist.”

Despite its controversy, many Harry Potter fans are hopeful a Cursed Child movie will one day happen.

Last year Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts producer Lionel Wigram told Express.co.uk last year that he thinks Cursed Child would make a great movie, but admitted Rowling would have to be convinced.

He said: “Whatever she wants, as far as I’m concerned, is right.

“I think [Cursed Child] would make a great movie. Maybe at some point she’ll be ready to do that.”
