MoviePass: Should you join MoviePass – Survey claims HALF of subscribers are leaving

MoviePass was one of cinema’s best ways to get people back into the theatres to watch the latest movie.

But subscriber numbers appear to be dropping sharply, according to a new survey from the National Research Group (NRG).

From the study, first reported in The Hollywood Reporter, almost half (47 percent) of 1,558 MoviePass subscribers were considering cancelling their subscription.

The subscription service has come under fire for its constantly changing prices, causing users to lose trust.

What is MoviePass?

MoviePass is a monthly subscription service that opens up cinema tickets for movie lovers.

For a fee per month, viewers can watch three movies a month at any participating theatres nationwide.

MoviePass came under fire from public outcry after it increased subscription prices from $9.95 a month to $14.95, while restricted some of the more popular movies it included in the deal.

The company has chopped and changed its model frequently in the last few months, shifting the number of movies subscribers can view in a month.

The constant shift appears to be causing a rift between company and consumer, with subscription numbers dropping significantly.

MoviePass is also making several changes to its subscriber structure, migrating annual subscribers over to the new monthly plan.

Those who were surveyed by NRG said they no longer found MoviePass to be trustworthy, claiming the constant changes in plans and rules made them unreliable.

Should you join MoviePass?

While the recent NRG survey suggests that customer satisfaction is low – 48 percent said they were satisfied with the company – there are still those who claim the service is worthwhile.

The NRG also published a survey back in April which claimed 83 percent of subscribers were satisfied with their service compared to other subscription options like .

According to the survey, more people were going to the theatre to watch movies because of their subscription, opening them up to a broader range of movie genres.

It is entirely up to you if you subscribe to a service like MoviePass, which offers a diverse range of movies for a fee.

If you’re less picky about which movies you see and when, and don’t care about seeing new releases on opening weekend, MoviePass makes sense.
