eBay is the place to head when it comes to buying or selling rare coins, playing host to hundreds of listings.

Whether or not the listings reach their asking price, or sell at all, is another question.

One coin that managed to sell for an impressive amount is a “rare” Charles Dickens £2 coin.

The coin was sold for a whopping £500 last night by eBay user ale-donn, who is based in Coventry.

The seller titled the listing: “*Charles Dickens 2 Pound Coin* Double Error VERY RARE (sic)”.

Hoping to pull in the big bucks, the seller then elaborated in depth about the coin in the listing’s description.

The description read: “Here I have a £2 coin for the anniversary of Charles Dickens, it is a double error coin and may be of interest to somebody who collects these.

“Error 1. ‘Something will turn up’ the script from the Dickens 1850 novel. This is upside down.

“Error 2. The dots around the queens head are missing and have made there way onto the gold part.

“Not sure how much this is worth but I have done some research into special coins.

“Collection in person would be preferred but can do a special delivery if needed (sic).”

Designed by Matthew Dent, the coin was minted in 2012 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of one of the world’s most famous novelists, Charles Dickens.

The coin features the profile silhouette of Dicken’s face, filled with titles of his most famous and beloved works.

The coin also featured the inscription, “Something will turn up”.

Charles Dickens is regarded as the greatest writers of the Victorian era, creating fictional characters such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield that are well-known and loved all over the world.

Despite selling for £500, the coin is actually rated as common by scarcity index CheckYourChange.co.uk.

The coin had a mintage for circulation of 8,190,00, meaning plenty of these coins are in the pockets of Britons right now.

Two of the same Charles Dickens coins were actually sold on eBay earlier this month for a staggering £3,500.

The listing contained two coins, which were both ‘very rare’ Charles Dickens £2 coins, originally minted in 2012 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the British novelist.

Fetching £3,500, the listing was titled: “Very Rare X2 Mint Error Charles Dickens £2 Coin.”
