Since The Last Jedi released last Christmas Hamill hasn’t exactly been subtle in voicing his issues with the latest outing.

Luke was a very positive force in the original trilogy, but in Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi he’s very pessimistic, something Hamill has struggled with.

In fact, almost a year on and the actor still doesn’t understand his character’s storyline.

A fan reached out to both Hamill and Johnson on Twitter, and the actor decided to respond.

The fan wrote: “Why did Luke give up in The Last Jedi?

“What other events made Luke give up?

“From what we know Luke made one mistake and he gave up.

“That doesn’t make sense. Could you please help me understand.”

He added: “But that always happens in films. You say, ‘Oh, what about this scene where this happens or that happens?’ because you want to give the fullest experience that you can.

“And like you say, it was brief enough that I was — [chuckles]

“They had time for me to milk that big alien but to show any human emotion? Nah, we don’t have time for that. But again it’s not my call.”

Mark Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IX in December 2019.
