The British actress has had huge acclaim for a variety of work, mostly on the small screen – but Hollywood success has not hit its stride for her just yet.

With The Favourite currently standing as one of the frontrunners for Oscars glory in 2019, could this be her time?

By the look of the first full trailer – out today – it’s Colman who undoubtedly steals the show.

The film is about the close relationship between Queen Anne (Colman) and Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) – and how it’s disrupted by envy when Sarah’s cousin Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives.

This kicks off a bitter rivalry to become the Queen’s favourite, against the backdrop of early 18th Century England.

Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, Mark Gatiss and James Smith also star, with Yorgos Lanthimos directing.

This film has been a long time in the making: Stone and Colman were both cast right back in September 2015, but it was Kate Winslet rather than Weisz who was booked to join them.

Filming took place at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire between March and May 2017.

The Favourite is part of the line-up for the BFI London Film Festival in October but its nationwide release will follow in January – making it a prime target for attention during awards season.

Weisz and Stone are already Oscar winners – Weisz having won for The Constant Gardener and Stone for La La Land.

Currently other frontrunners include First Man – the Neil Armstrong biopic starring Ryan Gosling, reuniting him with La La Land director Damien Chazelle.

That movie is already embroiled in a mild controversy, however, after it emerged that viewers will not see Gosling-as-Armstrong planting the American flag on the moon’s surface.

Others include A Star Is Born, which has picked up stellar reviews after the Venice Film Festival.

That film is directed by and stars Bradley Cooper, alongside a buzzworthy Lady Gaga.

Boy Erased, the gay conversion therapy drama starring Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman, is also getting early traction; as is Beautiful Boy with Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carrell.

The Favourite is out on January 1, 2019.
