In a general election which could see far-right anti-immigration party Sweden Democrats take on a key role in shaping the next government, polling station have been flooded with voters since early this morning.

This year’s election one of the most complicated in modern Swedish history and has divided and sparked fury among some voters.

Shortly before midday today, two members of the Sweden Democrats were attacked and verbally abused, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports.

One of the politicians, Emilie Orpana is pregnant and described the terrifying incident.

She said attackers began screaming at her calling her a “whore” and a “racist” as she campaigned in Nynäshamn, 35 miles south of Stockholm.

Ms Orpana said she was terrified of being kicked in the stomach and added: “I felt very worried and afraid.”

Another representative for the far-right party and a third person who had come to vote were also reportedly verbally abused by the two thugs.

Ms Orpana told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet: “He said he would step on my colleague’s head and kill us.”

The two men also tried to grab the two Sweden Democrats members and take their ballots.

Since Swedes began voting this morning more electoral workers have been attacked.

Politician Ann Heberlein from the Moderate party said a man walked over to her and called her “fascist” outside a polling station in Lund, the southern part of Sweden.

She told Aftonbladet: ”None of the people who were there intervened. It was only when my husband got there the abuser left me alone.”

Ms Heberlein added: “He said I was against everything good in this world and that the entire population of Sweden hates me.”

“He also called me ‘pussy’, ‘fascist’ and ‘whore’”.

She later took to Twitter to shame politicians who did not lend her a hand, calling them “cowards”.

Social Democrats MP Annika Strandhäll told Expressen.se: “It’s completely unacceptable and totally reprehensible.

“One should be able to feel completely safe as a political campaigning for their party.

”We have seen a more heated debate climate during this election campaign, but this is just not acceptable.”

Polling stations close at 7pm today and the majority of the ballots are expected to have been counted by 10pm.
