A Star Is Born UK release, review and Lady Gaga EXCLUSIVE: 'I'm NOTHING like my character'
Lady Gaga, with her co-star and director Bradley Cooper, is on the Graham Norton Show tonight, but before that she spoke to Express Online about her new movie.
At the star-studded London premiere, Gaga walked the red carpet in a spectacular John Galliano Elizabeth I gown and stopped to talk to us about A Star Is Born.
The film is being heralded as her entry into the top tiers of Hollywood, with early Oscar buzz for both stars.
It also seems to chime rather closely with her own path to fame and fortune but Gaga told us why she could never be like her character.
Gaga plays naive and downtrodden Ally to Cooper’s fading alcoholic star Jackson Maine.
On the red carpet Gaga told us: “The truth is me and Ally are very different. Ally doesn’t believe in herself. When I was 19 years old I was dragging my piano around all the bars banging on every door to play. Nothing could stop me.”
“She’s given up and that’s what you see at the beginning of the film. I hope people come to see the film and the journey they go on. It’s his love that lifts her up.”
She also gives Cooper, making his directorial debut, full credit for her performance and the power of the film.

Lady Gaga said; “I give him full credit for the beauty of this film. He is an incredible visionary. He lifted me up, he made me so comfortable to take off my make-up, to die my hair back to my normal colour and to be someone I hadn’t been for a long a time.”
Both stars expanded on these themes to Graham Norton.
Cooper said: “Before I said yes, a lot of friends said, ‘Don’t do it. It’s a crazy idea.’ But once she (Lady Gaga) agreed, I had to do it.”
Lady Gaga said: “Once I heard Bradley sing I was blown away by him, I was moved by his passion. He may have had to convince other people to have me in the movie but, he didn’t have to convince me.”
At the start of the film, downtrodden Ally is a million miles away from the larger-than-life Lady Gag. Talking about being unrecognisable in the film, the star said: “I tried to sneak some make-up in, but Bradley wouldn’t go for it.”
Cooper added: “It’s how the character is and Lady Gaga is incredible.”
