Netflix released its big budget thriller Annihilation on March 12, 2018.

The film is available exclusively to Netflix subscribers.

A small trick allows some viewers to watch the film for free, simply sign up for a free month-long trial.

The trial gives viewers access to Annihilation along with all of Netflix’s other film and TV content.

Once the trial period has elapsed, you can simply cancel the subscription without being charged or continue it by paying a monthly fee.

The film was originally slated for a theatrical release but due to creative differences between the producers and the director, leading Annihilation to be dropped on Netflix internationally.

Only audiences in America were able to watch the movie at cinemas.

What is Annihilation on Netflix about?

Annihilation is based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer and is the first instalment in the Southern Reach Trilogy.

Alex Garland of Ex Machine and 28 Days Later fame directed Annihilation.

A plot summary for Annihilation reads: “Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X – a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline.

“Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.”

Who stars in Annihilation on Netflix?

Annihilation features an all-star cast led by Oscar winner Natalie Portman, who takes on the role of scientist and military woman Lena, who ventures in to Area X to discover what has made her husband ill.

Taking on the part of the leader of the mission and psychologist Dr Ventress is Hollywood A-lister Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Star Wars and Ex Machina actor Oscar Isaac stars opposite her as Lena’s husband and soldier Kane, who is left fighting for his life after being plagued by a mystery virus.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez takes on the part of paramedic Anya Thorensen.

Joining Lena on her expedition is Westworld actress Tess Thompson as physicist Josie Radek.

While Swedish actress Tuva Novotny plays a geomorphologist called Cass Sheppard.

Other cast members include Benedict Wong, Sonoya Mizuno and David Gyasi.
