Where is Annihilation on Netflix set?

Netflix dropped Annihilation on March 12, 2018 for its international subscribers after the movie was only shown in cinemas in America.

Based on the first instalment from the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation is set at a government facility on the South-East Coast of America known as Area X.

The action takes place not only at Area X but primarily within a strange electromagnetic field known as the Shimmer.

Inside the Shimmer is a beautiful, idyllic forest world of natural beauty but there is also much danger as living things are mutating due to the electromagnetic field.

Biologist Lena (played by Natalie Portman) and an expedition team venture into the Shimmer in a bid to find a cure for the scientist’s husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) after he returns from it suffering from a strange illness.

Kane, who is a soldier, was the only member of his team to come back alive after going on a mission inside the Shimmer.

Along with scenes set in Area X and the Shimmer, some scenes are set at Kane and Lena’s home.

Speaking about the setting of the Shimmer, producer Andrew MacDonald told Collider: “Everything needs to feel like it comes from something real.

“If our world is going a little bit crazy, we tried to base it on things that are in our mutated world as opposed to simple fantastical creations…

“It’s not Terry Gilliam or Dungeon and Dragons. [It’s] sci-fi that is connected to our world, based on reality.”

He added that even though Annihilation is based in the US, it isn’t “set in an America you know.”

Where is Annihilation on Netflix filmed?

Although it’s set in America, Annihilation was actually filmed in England around London and East Anglia.

A lot of the film was shot on location at the world famous Pinewood Studios.

Scenes where the team were seen rowing boats through a marshy wasteland were filmed in Windsor’s Great Park, according to Atlas of Wonders.

The crew added foliage to give a more tropical look as the scenes were filmed in Wood Pond.

While the beach with the all important lighthouse at the centre of the Shimmer were filmed at St Mark’s Wildlife Refuge in Norwich on Holkham Beach.

However, the interiors of the lighthouse were filmed at a studio.

The military compound that Lena visited was shot at the old Bomb stores at the former Bentwaters Royal Air Force station in Suffolk.
