Apostle movie reviews: Dan Stevens stars in ‘SAVAGE, ruthless, gory’ new Netflix HORROR

There’s certainly been a recent revival in quality mainstream horror in the last few years with the likes of It, Get Out and Hereditary.

And now comes Netflix Original Apostle, a period piece starring Stevens and Sheen, helmed by The Raid director Gareth Evans.

So far the film has 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, although there’s still a flood more to come in.

A thought-provoking, taut thriller with great visuals and performances. It’s a deeper more meaningful film than The Raid which shows true growth for the filmmaker.

[Dan Stevens’] true calling is clearly to be covered in viscera and forced to face off against a power-mad Michael Sheen in a grisly and gory horror-thriller.

We Got This Covered

Gareth Evans’ Apostle is The Wicker Man, “Safe Haven” and Silent Hill thrown into a boil that bubbles over during a ruthless third act that certainly delivers if you have the patience.

Screen Crush

A solid mystery-thriller, but save for predictably engaging performances from Stevens and Sheen, it’s largely unremarkable.

Apostle’s synopsis reads: “The year is 1905.

“Thomas Richardson travels to a remote island to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult demanding a ransom for her safe return.

“It soon becomes clear that the cult will rue the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built.”

Apostle is released on Netflix on October 12, 2018.
