The Trench is both a name for a location in the Aquaman universe and the creatures who inhabit it. In 2011, The Trench was first introduced in Aquaman Volume seven. But The Trench also appeared in the Aquaman movie.

When is the Aquaman spin-off in cinemas?

The Trench has yet to get a firm release date but we do know one detail which comes from The Trench’s producer Peter Safran.

The spin-off will be released “significantly before” Aquaman 2 – which has a December 16, 2020 release date.

Safran told The Hollywood Reporter: “We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie.”

“Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be.

“We’ve definitely taken a page from our Conjuring playbook.”

The Conjuring was a film which grew into a universe now encompassing the Annabelle movies and 2018’s The Nun.

Safran explained the playbook: “You’ve got the mothership, which is Aquaman, but there are so many great stories to tell within that universe of itself, that Atlantean universe.”

As for cameos from the Aquaman stars, so far there are none planned.

When is The Trench set?

Safran confirmed the film will not be a prequel to Aquaman.

As for further Justice League films, they probably won’t happen any time soon.

Safran also said: “I think that when you’re making really strong stand-alone movies, there’s really no need to bring them together.

“You want to give these characters room to breathe and live, and tell their stories.”

The four-year gap between Aquaman and its sequel is already pretty full.

But fans of the underwater adventure story should rest easy during the way.

Of the wait, Safran said: “You don’t want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.”

Aquaman 2 is out in cinemas on December 16, 2020.
