Infinity War packed an enormous and devastating finale but there is an even bigger ending to come.

Marvel and Disney boss Bob Iger just revealed that Avengers 4 will bring a “significant end ” to everything that has come before and will close the whole series of Avengers movies.

Fans are already frantically speculating about who can be brought back from the dead after Avengers 3 and who will make the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers 4.

Iger and fellow Marvel bosses just gave a major interview which outlined a new superhero team franchise to replace the Avengers but also teased a return for the original MCU gang.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS INFINITY WAR

Iger told The Hollywood Reporter: “We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we’ve plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade. I’m guessing we will try our hand at what I’ll call a new franchise beyond Avengers.”

This fits with all indications that Avengers 4 will bring a change of guard as older characters step back and the new MCU players like Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marbel take over.

Iron Man, Thor and Captain America have all had individual trilogies and their lead actors are all believed to have reached the end of their contracts.

Does this new franchise talk confirm they will be leaving the MCU? Does this even mean that one or all of their characters will die in Avengers 4 to help reverse the catastrophic events of the Snap?

Iger did not give any hints about who may or may not exit permanently after Avengers 4 but he did offer a little hope that some Avengers could still return.

He added: “That doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see more Avengers down the road. We just haven’t made any announcements about that.

“Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don’t think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie.”

Despite the meticulously planning behind the entire MCU, Marvel has left itself plenty of room for flexibility to shufffle projects in and out.

There are only four films officialy confirmed: Ant Man and the Wasp this August (July in the US), followed by Captain Marvel and the untitled Avengers 4 and Spider-Man 2 next year.

After that there are nine release dates blocked out in global release schedules but no hint of what movies might fill them.

A Black Panther sequel is a certainty, along with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 but there is still plenty of room for at least some of the Avengers to hit the big screen again.
