Avengers 4: Is THIS the fate of Captain America?
Steve Rogers has been on quite the journey since Marvel‘s Captain America: The First Avenger.
Turning from scrawny, but brave, underdog to muscly superhero he defeated the Red Skull in World War II but ended up frozen for over 70 years.
Leaving behind Peggy Carter, his true love, he woke up in our modern world.
And since joining the Avengers, he’s seen the complicated return of his best bud Bucky, S.H.I.E.L.D. revealed as Hydra, seeing Peggy die of old age and has since been in exile after a civil war with Iron Man.
Then Avengers Infinity War kicked off and the troubled Cap, bearded and representing no country, did all he could in the fight against Thanos.
That was until the Mad Titan actually won and half the universe turned to ash.
And there at the end of the movie the last line came from the ever hopeful, ever faithful and stedfast Cap, ‘Oh God…”
He’s in a place of hopelessness and despair and no doubt will have to put aside his differences with Tony Stark for the sake of saving the world in Avengers 4.
His future beyond this point in the MCU remains quite the mystery, especially as it looks like actor Chris Evans will bow out some how in this movie.
Cap is certainly seen as one of the more likely characters to die in the process of bringing others back, but what if the use of time travel – as expected in Avengers 4 – will actually give Steve the ending we all want him to have.
Reddit user knoxvile10 saw a theory on Instagram they found convincing.
They wrote: “So the entire theory revolves around time travel being a big plot point in Avengers 4. It doesn’t matter really what they use it for but just that it is used.”
They continued: “The theory speculated that once Thanos is defeated and half the universe is brought back Steve Rogers uses whatever they’ve been time traveling with to go back to 1940 and stay there with Peggy Carter to live out the rest of his life with her.
“This way it’s an emotional sendoff to one of the most beloved characters in the MCU and it completes his character arc.”
It would certainly be a great ending for Cap, but fans will have to wait until next year to find out what happens next.
Avengers 4 will be released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2019.
