Avengers 4: Nebula bombshell dropped by Karen Gillan – bosses made THIS last-minute change
The former Doctor Who star has played Nebula in two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Avengers: Infinity War.
She’ll be back next year in the hugely anticipated Avengers 4, and also in the currently up-in-the-air Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Before appearing on screen for the very first time, the blue character nearly had one very noticeable difference to the version we now know and love – but GOTG director James Gunn had a last-minute change of heart.
That difference is that Gillan was originally supposed to keep her native Scottish accent – but was asked to switch to American at the last minute.
Speaking to The Empire Film Podcast in an interview that has resurfaced on a Marvel subreddit (via Webbed Media), she said: “I auditioned for Nebula in a Scottish accent. Did a screen-test in a Scottish accent and got the role.
“She was going to be Scottish! We were going to have an Invernessian alien in Guardians of the Galaxy. We were so close!
“And then right before I started filming the director (James Gunn) was like, ‘make her American.’ And I was like ‘okay’.
Nebula was one of few Marvel favourites who survived the events of Avengers: Infinity War; with Thanos successfully killing off half of all living things in the universe thanks to the power of the Infinity Stones.
In the comics, Nebula plays a very key part in the final resolution of the plot, but it remains to be seen if this will be stuck to on the big screen.
Gillan has recently been filming Avengers 4 reshoots, and certainly alluded to having more scenes with Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.
Sharing a screenshot of her iPhone alarm screen, he wrote the caption: “You know what this means…
“Nebula has some unfinished business with Daddio. Reshoots!”
Will that “unfinished business” involve her taking the Infinity Gauntlet, as she did in the comic of the same name? We’ll have to wait and see.
In other reshoots news, Tessa Thompson is believed to have been spotted in Atlanta with Thor star Chris Hemsworth – prompting strong rumours that Valkyrie will be back.
Avengers 4 will be preceded by the 1990s-set Captain Marvel, which comes out in March.
The film will then be released on April 26, 2019 in the UK.
