Avengers Captain America 100th birthday: Marvel explains HOW he survived 70 years in ice
It was the ultimate ice-scapade.
Steve Rogers heroically crashed his World War 2 plane into the Arctic ice to save the rest of humanity from the weapon on board. 70 years later his body was found and revived, without a scratch and looking not a day older. How is that possible, even for a superhero?
Previously it was assumed the super-serum, which transformed a puny runt into the strapping Captain America, did all the work. But an official Marvel exhibition has given a full ‘scientific’ explanation.
With many fans fearing Steve Rogers will not make it out alive from Avengers 4, could this be a clue to what could save him?
Marvel fan DarthAlex22 reported that the S.T.A.T.I.O.N. Marvel exhibit in Las Vegas has a teh full details.
The entire exhibition is rigged up to look like the SHIELD headquarters, with interactive dispays and information points. (Scroll down to watch the promo video.)
One of them says:”Physical examination of Capt. Rogers revealed that while thickened, his blood’s water was not frozen. Blood tests revealed that his blood contained excessive amounts of glucose as a result of his liver processing his glycogen stores, thus lowering the freezing temperature of blood-borne water and creating a ‘cryoprotectant’.
“This process is similar to that of Water-Bears (Tardigrades) and hibernating Wood Frogs who metabolise glycogen in their liver to circulate copious amounts through their body to reduce the osmotic shrinkage of cells and stop from freezing. This, however, has never been seen before in humans.”
Most of us were lost somewhere before ‘osmotic shrinkage’ but it sounds suitably scientific.
One dubious fan soon commented: “He has enough glucose to last 70 years?” and another quipped: “Well, he had a big breakfast.”
OFFICIAL AVENGERS ART PROVES WHERE AND ‘WHEN’ THANOS WENT AT THE END OF INFINITY WAR
Previous explanations had explored the concept of suspended animation but fans also suggested that the Cap’s regerative healing powers also would have helped protect his body and slow any ageing.
It is certain that Steve Rogers now ages rather like Wolverine and their healing abilities cancel out most of the normal human age damage to cells.
Of course, now fans are desperate to find out if Steve Rogers will make his 101th birthday, with man expecting Captain America and Iron Man to both exit the MCU after Avengers 4, possibly even sacrificing their lives to save the universe.
Not even hibernating Wood Frogs can do that…
