WARNING – spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War ahead.

Picked up on by user DSC_ on Reddit, it’s a blink-and-you-miss-it moment that shows just how impressive Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is.

When he offers Thanos (Josh Brolin) the Time Stone in exchange for Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) life, it’s already established that the Stone was not what he had around his neck, after all.

Its actual location was an illusion hiding in plain sight.

DSC_ wrote: “When Strange reveals the time stone to Thanos, it shows he’s been disguising it as a star in the background the whole time. An illusion. Holy f**k balls.

“Of course, I’m not saying I discovered this. I’m sure people noticed this themselves, but I’m also sure a lot of you haven’t!”

Sure enough, Marvel fans have been incredibly impressed.

“What the hell. That’s a great catch,” said one.

“ummm what the f**k,” wrote another. “i watched that 3 times and got it at the last watch.”

“Yo what the f**k, never even registered that when I saw that haha,” a third exclaimed.

Doctor Strange was one of many heroes to fall victim to the wipeout of 50% of humanity at the end of Infinity War, but many have theorised that he holds the key to the resolution in Avengers 4.

There was a moment in the film prior to Thanos collecting the Stones, where he envisioned millions upon millions of possible outcomes from the heroes’ plight. He noted that only one of them was a happy ending.

And then, having previously told Stark he would have let him die if it meant saving the Time Stone, he offered to actually save his life and sacrifice the Stone.

Many think that the latter moment was a result of the former – that Doctor Strange is playing the long game and knew that Thanos had to get the Stones for things to work out well in the end.

How exactly this will pan out, of course, is a anyone’s guess – and we still have another year until we know for sure.

In the meantime, Marvel will drop Ant-Man and the Wasp in July, and Captain Marvel next March.

Avengers: Infinity War is out now.
