Avengers Infinity War ending symbol: Nick Fury, Captain Marvel and Avengers 4

Joe and Anthon Russo insisted that Infinity War was a complete story in its own right.

Most fans may disagree and suggest it ended on a hell of a cliffhanger with death and destruction across the universe and the loss of major characters.

As soon as the movie credits rolled fans were already starting to try and work out how Thanos’s terrrible actions could be reveresed.

Then the one single mid-credits scene gave a huge clue about what comes next.

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS

The scene shows Nick Fury and Maria Hill viewing the destruction of New York wreaked by Ebony Maw. He may have access to incredible technology but Fury pulls out an ancient pager to message for help.

As The Snap reverberates across the universe, both characters crumple to dust and the final shot of the movie shows an iconic symbol displayed on the pager.

Captain Marvel is coming. But where has she been and why hasn’t she helped in the past?

The Captain Marvel movie will be released just a few months before Avengers 4 next years. Brie Larson will debut as Carol Danvers and show her transformation into one of the most powerful beings alive.

The movie is set in the 1990s (which explains the pager) and also stars Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury, long before he began to build the Avengers team.

The cast list for Avengers 4 has already confirmed that Captain Marvel will appear. Clearly Fury has been carrying the communication device all along, so why didn’t he use it when Earth was in dire peril previously from Ultron or Loki and the Chitauri?

Although details have not been released, in every comicbook incarnation Captain Marvel is virtually the MCU equivalent of Superman with god-like powers and this throws up hugely intriguing possibilities.

Would she be able to wield the Infinity Stones? Is she part of the time travel plot rumoured for Avengers 4? Was she trapped in another dimension after the events of her own movie and will Quantum Realm travelling Ant-Man be involved in her return?

Did Nick Fury call her for help before and she did not respond? Or did they both somehow foresee the coming of Thanos and the device was only to be used in that event?
