Avengers Infinity War ticket predictions are LOWER than expected: Should fans worry?

It is supposed to be the biggest MCU movie of all time.

Ten years and 18 films have lead to this moment, but suddenly it is not certain whether it will also biggest the biggest blockbuster of all time, or even the biggest Marvel movie.

The predictions for tickest sales in the crucial US opening weekend have been released and are extremely impressive, but may not match the staggering success of Black Panther earlier this year.

Should fans be worried?

The Hollywood Reporter said: “Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is tracking to open to a huge $200 million-plus at the domestic box office.

“Projections could easily climb higher in the three weeks that remain before the movie’s debut in theaters on April 27. Disney insiders are being more conservative, suggesting $175 million to $200 million.”

By contrast, Black Panther opened to $202million but also recorded remarkably high subsequent weeks when most blockbusters traditionally quickly dip.

The only other Marvel films on a similar level are The Avengers with $207.4 million, Avengers: Age of Ultron on $191.3 million and Captain America: Civil War with $179.1 million.

Based on the current predictions, Infinity War could still catch and pass Jurassic World’s $208.8 million but the two new Star Wars trilogy entries may be out of reach.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened with $248 million and remains the all-time top, followed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi on $220 million. 

If Infinity War is the culmination of the entire box office busting franchise, why is is looking unlikely to claim one of the top spots? 

The enormous success of The Force Awakens and Black Panther has been credited to their unique status as “event movies.”

They are not just blockbusters but actual social and cultural events that bring out entire communities or generations. A similar effect was recorded by Mel Gibson’ Passion of the Christ tapping into religious audiences.

Avengers Infinity War still has three weeks and an enormous amount of hype before it blasts off and may yet topple all its Marvel stablemates and possibly even one of the two Star Wars.
