Avengers Infinity War to Sicario 2: How Josh Brolin is conquering the box office this year
With three huge films out within the space of a few months, it’s been incredibly difficult to avoid the man of the moment.
With his latest release, Sicario 2: Soldado, hitting UK cinemas today, we’re taking a look into Brolin’s year and why it’s been so magnificent.
Possibly one of the biggest releases of 2018 saw the 50-year-old like we’d never seen before: eight foot tall, purple, and trying to wipe out half the universe.
Taking on the huge role of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Brolin gave a standout performance leaving many cinema goers open mouthed and itching to find out what happens next.
His terrifying character engulfs the screen, and was hailed by Marvel fans for being among the MCU’s most engaging villains.
Interestingly, out of the huge ensemble of characters, he also holds the trophy for the most screen time in the record-breaking blockbuster – with 29 minutes. That’s entire 22 minutes and 55 seconds longer than fan favourite Captain America.
Within weeks of Infinity War came Deadpool 2 – again putting Brolin front and centre.
With the Fox and Disney deal decided, he has managed the impressive feat of not only being a main character in two Marvel films but having two successive US box office number one hits.
Appearing as fan favourite Cable, he beefed up considerably for the role through vigorous workouts and harsh diets.
In interviews he revealed that he nearly rejected the role and was reluctantly persuaded by his wife, Kathryn, to read the script – after which he was convinced he should take the job.
Now, fast forward just over one month, he can now be seen in Sicario 2. Reprising his role as Matt from 2015’s first film, fans will no doubt be hugely excited to see Brolin back together with Benicio del Toro – after they shared a scene together in Infinity War.
Tackling serious topics of drug cartels and the Mexican border crossing, this film has come at a time that’s incredibly topical, given the current media spotlight on the issue in real life.
With hints of the Sicario series turning into a trilogy, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
The year of Brolin doesn’t stop here, either. Off-screen, he recently announced his wife’s pregnancy on Instagram; sharing a picture of Kathryn in workout clothes sporting a very visible bump.
Josh captioned the snap: “There’s a new sheriff in town, and she’s no bigger than a sweet potato,Hang on to your hats. #jbkbstucktogether #lilbeanterritory #loveisaslovedoes.”
If the new Brolin arrival is anything like her dad, we could be seeing her on screen in a few years too.
Sicario 2 is out now.
