Avengers Infinity War: Writers explain THAT Captain Marvel scene ‘The best chance of hope’
WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.
The character, played by Brie Larson, will make her debut in next year’s Captain Marvel solo movie, before popping up in Avengers 4.
The post-credits tag on Infinity War saw Nick Fury using a communication device to make contact with the hero – real name Carol Danvers – shortly before he himself turned to ash.
It was a moment of hope after an exceptionally grim ending, which saw 50% of all humanity – including the Marvel roster – killed.
Speaking in a new interview with Collider, writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus opened up on the thinking behind it.
“We thought, ‘do you want to give any hope?’” McFeely said. “It’s a tragedy and tragedies end in a grim and sad end.”
Markus added: “When you end it like that, there aren’t too many other places you can go [for a tag scene].
“Marvel tags often point to the next movie coming. The next movie is Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is light-hearted – you don’t wanna go, ‘but meanwhile! Paul Rudd is still adorable!’”
“We wanted to give a bit of hope to people,” McFeely reasoned. “And that was the best chance we had.”
They also likened the situation they found themselves in over Captain Marvel with one they’ve faced before.
“We were in the same position we were in with Spider-Man and Black Panther where Brie [Larson] was going to have to shoot her scenes before she shot Captain Marvel,” McFeely revealed.
But when they learned that Captain Marvel would be set in the past – the 1990s, to be exact – that seemingly made life a lot easier.
