Bodied reviews: What do critics have to say about Eminem's hip-hop comedy-drama?

Bodied is a melding of genres which seem, at first glance, incompatible.

But Bodied proves that sometimes odd bedfellows make the best entertainment.

The hip-hop comedy-drama is available to stream on YouTube’s Premium service.

The cast may be relatively unknown, but its producer is far from obscure – Eminem is the man behind the movie.

What do critics have to say about Bodied?

Bodied’s Rotten Tomatoes score is a very strong 88 percent.

The audience score is higher, at 90 percent.

The consensus reads: “With its thorny themes and aggressive humour, Bodied dares to offend – and justifies its approach with a subversive comedy that edifies as it entertains.”

Joshua Rothkopf gave Bodied four out of five stars at Time Out.

He wrote: “Bodied is a deliriously rude provocation, maybe the most daring race-related movie since Spike Lee’s Bamboozled.”

April Wolfe at AV club wrote: “Simultaneously entertaining, overwhelming, compelling, and grating, Bodied raises its hand and talks until words mean nothing and everything.”

She gave it a score of B.

Jeanette Catsoulis of The New York Times was impressed by the movie, writing: “With visuals as kinetic as its language, Joseph Kahn’s “Bodied” is an outrageously smart, shockingly funny satire of PC culture whose words gush so quickly you’ll want to see it twice.”

Rolling Stone critic David Fear gave it three out of five stars.

His critique, however, wasn’t wholly positive, saying: “We tip our caps to Kahn & Co’s underdog story.

“But satire-wise, there’s some killer bars left on the killing floor here.”

Coming somewhere between out-right enthusiasm and scepticism was Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri.

Ebiri wrote: “Bodied is uneven, but it has the fire where it counts.”

Eric Kohn at IndieWire gave it a score of B+ – saying: “Bodied doesn’t come to any hard conclusions, but suggests that the ultimate cathartic power of rap comes from its ability to be an equal-opportunity offender.”

Whether you’re a fan of one or all the aforementioned genres, Bodied is the movie for you.
