The film will mark the Oscar winner’s Marvel debut, after she was strongly alluded to in the end credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War.

The 90s-set blockbuster is currently in production, although Larson told E! the experience hasn’t been that different to her small-budget indie projects.

Asked how it feels to be shooting a comic book film, she said: “It’s sort of interesting because it doesn’t feel like it’s happening to me. The surreal aspects of it feel like it’s happening to someone else.

I’m just making the movie right now, and that part is kind of the same! The only difference is there are more people there.”

Pushed on whether the filming process for Captain Marvel is a little more intense than what she’s used to, Larson replied: “That stuff is my favourite part, that stuff is where you find the character.

“It’s ‘how far can I take myself to reprogram my brain and reprogram by body to learn something new about myself?’ So this has been an amazing challenge.

“She [Danvers] is so strong, she can move planets – so to me it was like, ‘how far can I go with this strength?’”

On what fans can expect, the 28-year-old teased: “They should get excited.

“I’m really proud of what we’re making and I really think all the hype and anticipation will be worth it.”

Captain Marvel will be out two months before Avengers 4, which draws a line under the current MCU era.

After that, it’s business as usual with a new Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Larson will be joined in Captain Marvel by Samuel L Jackson, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou and Jude Law among others.

Annette Bening is also on board in a mystery role.

Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2019.
